Sustain® Case Study

How Point Group has used Sustain® to benefit its clients

Point Group is a marketing and procurement business established in South Africa in 2006.

Over the past 17 years it has expanded into the Middle East and African regions and now operates across 26 countries with key clients including some of the largest FMCG companies.

Point Group has been using Sustain® since 2020 as a tool to measure and provide insights to their clients that assists in driving positive change.

Sustainability Challenges

Working across multiple regions, Point has to consider each region’s capabilities, availability of materials and recycling methods. This of course adds a layer of complexity when designing sustainable solutions for its clients.

Point chose to use Sustain® as it has been specifically designed to measure display items, rather than other solutions which were focused more on the building and construction industries. This makes the results it produces both relevant and reliable.

"Sustain® provides us with a tool to measure and provide insights to our clients, to assist in the process of driving positive change"

Benefits of Sustain®

The ability to compare displays against proposed alternatives is a key feature in Sustain®, and Point has found this invaluable to being proactive in its approach to selecting alternative materials for its clients.

In line with clients’ goals, KPIs and recognised global standards, there is a focus on CO2e and materials usage within the reports that Point use. Sustain® has highlighted how even the smallest design change or material alternative can have far-reaching impacts, from production to end-of-life.

For Point, Sustain® is a global design indicator tool that works with the principles of LCA to gain an understanding of the environmental impact of a display unit.

“The smallest design change or material alternative can have far-reaching impacts. It doesn’t always have to be a large-scale change to a structure to make it more environmentally friendly.”

Successfully using alternative materials

In collaboration with Haleon, Point used Sustain® to re-design an existing metal unit using alternative, more sustainable materials.

The new fit-for-purpose display used a paper-based corrugated board, and the project overall achieved a 78% net cost reduction and a 88% reduction in carbon.
